The statement of purpose, or SOP, could be considered the most crucial part of applying to a university as an international student. One can think of an SOP as somewhat like a lottery to some extent, you either hit the jackpot or you don’t. However, unlike a lottery where every single aspect of the result entirely depends upon fate, one can control how good they can make their SOP. Thus, the following tips can significantly help aspiring applicants for the GTE.
First, the SOP needs an exciting and encouraging opening; it has to feel genuine and convey sincerity when being read. Thus, copying someone else’s SOP is out of the question, as the lack of enthusiasm will be painfully clear. The SOP should provide sufficient details regarding one’s academic background and latest qualifications. It should also state the name of the institutions and the year in which one obtained said qualifications. In case of a gap year/years, one must provide valid reasons. If applying for a master’s program, it is better to showcase interest in conducting research, long-term goals, and significant career aspirations as to how this degree may help you reach higher in your respective field.
If a Bachelor’s is the choice of education, short-term goals will suffice, and how this degree may help open doors you previously had no idea how to enter. It would be best if you also spoke about your activities and interests outside your academics and how these correlate with the goals that you aspire to achieve. Another important aspect is that after reading your SOP, the decision committee should feel you can add value to their university through research and other activities in your chosen field of study. Transparently write these in an active voice. Other than these, provide enough incentives about the fact that you aspire to return home and have sufficient reasons to do so. A case of one’s mind changing and them applying for lawful methods to prolong their stay is a different matter. Migration fraud is strictly monitored and, thus, the reason for requiring powerful incentives.
Follow the proper SOP writing format and do not cross the word limit. Also, if you are applying to multiple universities, customize it accordingly. Do not provide personal details beyond necessity, and do not repeat your scores for exams like IELTS, GMAT, GRE, etc. These scores are already a part of the application process. Stating them twice will not improve your odds. Make sure your SOP doesn’t come across as meaningless or vague. Provide facts and data to back up your statements, and do not use generic words or phrases you saw when googling. Also, remember that it should feel consistent when reading from the beginning to the end. The tone and feel should remain constant. Lastly, do not try to hide crucial details to make your SOP look better, as this is one of the core reasons behind the rejection.
